How the grade works
CrimeGrade.org grades every US city, town, county, neighborhood, and ZIP code from A+ to F using reported crime data, normalized per capita so places of any size can be compared fairly. The interactive card shows the overall, violent, and property grades together; the image badge shows the one you pick. Both render live from our data: when the data refreshes, every embed updates itself. Address searches show the grade for that address's own census block, alongside the neighborhood it sits in.
Common questions
Is it really free? Yes, for every kind of organization. The only requirement is the credit link in the embed code, and you may qualify it with rel=”nofollow” if you prefer.
What do the embeds show? Your area's current grades and the year, rendered live from our data, so they never go stale. Address embeds show the grades for that address's census block, with the surrounding area for context.
What if there is no data for my block? The card says so honestly. No data means unknown, and we never render it as a grade.
Who uses badges like this? Cities and police departments announce safety rankings every year, and tourism bureaus, chambers of commerce, and community developers feature them prominently. This badge works the same way, except it is available to every well-graded place in the country all year, not just an annual top-100 list.
Can real estate sites use it? Yes, including per listing with that address's block. We ask that the badge be presented as what it is, an objective data grade, shared evenly, and not used to compare or characterize communities against each other. We may withdraw permission for use that is misleading, discriminatory, or disparaging of other areas.
Can I look up a lot of addresses? Address lookups are capped at 10 unique addresses per hour per site. If you need more, or want grades on every listing your platform serves, request bulk access, it's free.
My area's grade is not great. Can I still use it? The generator works for every place and always shows the real grade, so that is your call to make.
